Reviews for Great Minds Think Alike

I'm not a fan of yaoi pairings, I will admit, but these two together make a vast amount of sense.

However, I do take issue with the, well the sex itself to be honest. These are cosmic beings. Beings of energy, points in spacetime with almost a cursory physical interface. They are post-human, post-physical, and thus post-sexual. The Silver Surfer was a man, and he retains his memories and emotional connections to his past and to other beings on an emotional and intellectual level, but he is far, far from human. He doesn't eat, or drink, or sleep, or breathe. These things are as distant to him as an adult human is to using a diaper and breastfeeding. He's beyond such things. He doesn't hide his genitals, he has left them behind entirely as useless artifacts of a former meat existence that is no longer relevant.

In my mind, he's far more advanced on the same path Jon is on. I can see Jon attempting to engage sexually in the way he knows simply because it's what he feels is expected of him, and the Surfer simply stopping him, saying something similar to Yoda's famous expression that "luminous beings are we, not this crude matter". And Jon struck with the truth of it, and with how truly compatible he is with this new partner and indeed relieved not to have to pretend a physical process that is redundant. I see him looking down at the Surfer's smooth, neuter form and smiling, seeing the path forwards and with a wave of his hand altering his form to be as bereft of useless legacy parts such as nipples, anus, and genitals as that of the Silver Surfer.

The ensuing act of joining would be on a higher plane, mind and spirit joining in an interplay of pure cosmic energy itself.

I don't say that because of a sense of "eww male sex, squicky no!". I merely wouldn't have read it if that were the case. The pairing makes huge amounts of sense, and I applaud you for thinking of it first. However, as a lifelong Silver Surfer fan (long, long before the film) I wanted to put in my perspective on how he works. And how similarly that working is to Jon's nature, which is why the pairing makes so much sense in the first place.

In the comics, the Surfer was once paired with another Herald named Nova, a golden flaming female who was in truth as functionally genderless as he. Like him, she was smooth metal lacking nipples or genitals or anus, like him lacking any need to eat or drink or sleep or breathe, functioning on a pure cosmic energy level. Over the years, it's been to my mind the only canon pairing that made any sense. Her female personality and superficially female form worked well with the memory and lingering personality traits of the straight male he once was, but their romance was not sexual. It couldn't be. They interacted through cosmic energy exchange. She was once quoted as saying "I radiate energy, you absorb it, so no one can ever kiss you like I can!".

Well, no one but Doctor Manhattan. But their interaction should be no more physically sexual and no less focused on the realm of pure energy that Surfer and Nova's were.

Luminous beings are they, not crude matter.
